Counselling is a a therapeutic interaction process between two people who bring with them emotions, thoughts and feelings. They are alive! It is therefore important to observe these three factors before conducting a counselling session. They are unconditional positive regards (accepting someone without prejudice or being judgmental), empathy (understanding the person from their world-views or perspectives), and congruence (following their frame of mind, thoughts and feelings during the interaction).
Counselling is sometimes called “talk-therapy” since we could solve issues or problems without taking any medication. Some people just need to talk to a counsellor when they are feeling stressful or down. We become motivated, positive, and energetic when the counsellor is able to address our worry, fear or pain by using the right words and responses during the therapy session. In addition, it is always important to ensure the confidentiality of our interaction in the process of building trust and exploring deeper personal issues. Amazingly, you will feel the difference in your relationships if you observe and apply the above concepts with your loved ones, colleagues, friends and students…
